Hey guys! I posted this over at the "old" JC Campgrounds too, but I thought I'd try to spread the word as much as possible! :D
As you probably know, Jeremy and the crew support a great child sponsorship organization called Compassion International. I would highly encourage people to sponsor a child if possible, but I know that financial situations don't always allow for that.
So how can you help (for FREE)?
Go to http://www.searchkindly.org (powered by Google) and use it as your search engine! It's that easy!
Each month they choose a non-profit to donate all advertising money to, and this month's recipient (month of May) is Compassion! They say that just by making Search Kindly your default homepage you can add about $3 to the total amount to be donated. Cool stuff!
Thanks for reading...and I hope you'll use Search Kindly (http://www.searchkindly.org) this month and help out Compassion!

How long does it last for?
It's just until the end of May for Compassion, and then for June they'll have a different non-profit organization.
Thanks for jumping on board guys and gals! Tell everyone you know! :)

Alright..so basically if you just use it and set it as your home page they get money? How easy it is to make a difference.
jayhawk4
05-14-2008, 09:58 PM
Yep...easy! They donate all of their advertising profits to the chosen charity for the month. So the more eyes that see the ads, the more money they raise!

Repeat visits help, but not as much as new hits from different computers.
This blog (http://blog.compassion.com/search-kindly/) from Compassion's website might help explain a little. :)

Just a reminder...you can still help out Compassion International (through next week, so we've got about a week and a half to go).
Their goal was $1000, and right now there's only about $563, so be sure to keep using searchkindly.org (http://www.searchkindly.org) for your searches!
jayhawk4
05-26-2008, 01:27 PM
Use Search Kindly (http://www.searchkindly.org) for your Google searches!!
This week is our last chance to generate money for Compassion through Search Kindly. Right now the total is getting close to $780, but their goal for the month is $1000. (From what I've seen on the site, I don't think they've ever reached the $1000 mark, so let's set the record!!)
They generate revenue (donation money) through advertising, so the more eyeballs that view the site, the more the total will rise! Thanks for helping out, and let's continue to make the total grow!! :)

At the beginning of this year, I decided to sponsor a child through Compassion International. I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we could talk about these child sponsorship organizations and any children we sponsor! Do any of you sponsor children -- whether through Compassion, World Vision, etc?
I'm currently sponsoring a little girl (5 yrs. old) from Nicaragua. During this sponsorship process (just 7 months, so far), I've really been amazed at all of the things that God is doing in my heart. Sponsoring this child has opened my eyes to world news, especially stories that deal with poverty and human rights.
I'm reminded of the lyrics to a song we sing often at church, "Hosanna." There's a line that says, "Break my heart for what breaks Yours / Everything I am for Your kingdom's cause."

Thanks for posting those lyrics! Very powerful!

Anyone else?
On another note, I got a letter in the mail from Compassion today asking for donations toward their Global Food Crisis fund (http://www.compassion.com/sponsordonor/global-food-crisis/default.htm). As prices continue to rise worldwide, it's becoming more and more difficult for people to survive. Many people in these poorer countries were struggling to begin with, so now they're forced to get by with even less! Even families in Compassion's sponsored areas are being affected, so prayer and donations are so important right now.
I'd encourage everyone to pray -- pray for mothers who go to sleep at night not knowing if they'll be able to feed their children in the morning, pray for children with empty tummies, pray for fathers who are making what money they can but knowing that it won't be enough.

I have two little girls, Hannah from Ghana and Jeanne from Rwanda. They're 9 and 12. I started with Jeanne about 3 years ago and then decided to go for another about six months after. I can definitely say that there's NO better way to spend my $64 a month. To be with these girls for such a chunck of their lives, to hear about what's going on with their family and school, and to hear about what God is doing with their little hearts is completely life changing. If God is calling you do to this...please do it! You won't regret it!:D

Compassion International does child sponsorship with the church congregation I attend here in Deschappelles. They are quite strict about making sure that all funds are used correctly for the kids.
We work with World Vision and Save the Children also, but not on sponsorship projects. Both of those organizations apply for and get major international grants. In my area, World Vision is doing a women and children's Food aid program funded by USAID. Save is running a maternal child health pilot project.
If people have specific questions about those 3 organizations in Haiti, PM me.

Thanks, Dawn. It's cool to hear about these ministries from someone who sees their work first-hand.
Compassion has a special fund set up for Haiti hurricane relief right now. I'd encourage anyone to check it out. They know of 3 Compassion children who've died as a result of the storms, and many more that they're trying to track down information on. Everyone in these areas can use our prayers, and also any money we can give.

I try to keep up with numbers of Compassion's sponsored children at concerts. I thought we should have a thread for those of you who keep up with it as well. I encourage you to visit the Compassion table at shows and ask how many children have been sponsored at that show. They're more than happy to share the numbers with us.
MercyMe and Bebo Norman are on tour right now and Compassion is out with them. They were in Austin last week. At the show 267 children were sponsored! That's awesome!!!

Went to Creation Fest Tour last night and at the end of the show, four kids had been sponsored (one being my friend). That was kinda disappointing to hear, but then I thought, hey, that's 4 kids who didn't have sponsors before. I meant to ask if they could give me a number for the entire tour but I forgot :(

On Compassion's blog, they recently posted an entry to discuss letter writing ideas, which I thought was great! It's easy to forget how big of an impact our letters and prayers can make for these kids. People posted some good ideas too. Today I went to the dollar store and picked up some animal stickers, colored band aids and Dora the Explorer card games.

Great thread!!!
Hey, Dawn;
I remember that my mother used to sponsor a child through World Vision. She sponsored her for about 10 yrs. or so, and something happened to where she hadn't received a letter in while, so she ended up contacting them, and got really upset because the girl she was sponsoring got married, and they never bothered to tell her, so she kept sending $$$. I guess they were using it to sponsor another child. I'm assuming it was a fluke or something on their part, because from what I understand, it's a pretty reputable organization.
Anyhow, ya, I sponsor a little 7 yr. old girl from Ecuador through Compassion. In fact, I have her picture hanging right above my computer. She is so cute. I love getting her letters in the mail. I think I've written her about 3 times.
Compassion actually sent me a brochure with an application in the mail a few weeks ago, asking me if I wanted to be an advocate. Has anyone else received one? It's basically just spreading the word about Compassion, and trying to increase sponsorship. I was thinking about it, but right now, I'm involved in a fundraising project in my church for Bible League, and I don't want to overdo it, asking people for $$$$. Economically, times are hard.
One nice thing, though....with the materials, Compassion sent me a bumper sticker for my car.
I would love to go on one of those sponsorship trips, but it's just way out of my budget.

Yeah, I've thought about being an advocate, but I haven't actually done that yet. I kind of like being able to help out where and when I can without being obligated to do anything.

My little girl will be turning 7 this year.. her birthday is 2 days after mine..
Her story is a sad story though.. but it has a happy ending. The orphange my church supports is called Happy Home for the Handicapped.. and most of the 87 kids are severely handicapped.. there are some that are not. Kavya is one of the girls perfectly healthy. But her story is like I said sad, her mom passed away when she was younger than she is now.. and her dad remarried.. and her new mom didnt want her. So they abandoned her. Sad, yes.. but at Happy home she receives all the love from the people who take care of the kids.. Irene, Roshan and Reema, and a few other staff members..
The story on how the orphanage came about you should go to the website www.happyhomeforthehandicapped.com and read it.. It is a touching story...
I might be taking a trip there this summer.. Lord willing..

Has anyone else heard of this? Are any of you planning on doing it?
April 26th is Compassion Sunday. They have asked us to use that day to present Compassion to our local churches. If you sign up to do it, they mail you a Compassion materials kit absolutely free of charge!
I don't know about you guys, but I'm AWFUL at public speaking! So the thought of doing this scares me to no end, but I feel God just tugging at me to go through with it. I'm gonna talk to my pastor on Sunday and see what he thinks. Maybe there are other sponsors in the church who can do the presentation with me :) That would help for sure!
Anyways, if you haven't heard of it, go here to learn more: http://www.compassion.com/share/compassionsunday/default.htm
And if you're thinking about it but you're like me and the thought just scares you to no end, I encourage you to at least discuss it with your pastor. Maybe there are others at your church who will do the presentation with you, or maybe your pastor will do the presentation and you can just be in charge of the table :)
And let it be known that what put me over the edge on deciding to do this was logging into facebook for the first time since doing the Crowns Camp and seeing an ad for Compassion with a pic of Jeremy & one of his sponsored children! Hehe...if that wasn't a sign I don't know what is!

A great ministry to get behind and support! Any ministry like this that reaches out to little ones puts a smile on the face of the Lord. We like to sponsor a child at Tuplelo Children's Mansion in MS. We need to find a new one now because the one we'd been sponsoring for years turned 18 and is out on his own now. I hope he keeps in touch with us. Anyway, way to go Kelly. Keep letting people know about all these awesome ways to help people in need. :)

I just got another letter from my child. Yay! She told me about how she won a spelling contest and included a picture of her with her medal and prizes :) So cute! She also told me she plays flute, which I played for 9 years in school! Awesome! Love it when there's a connection like that!

sponsoring a child is something i've been thinking about for years now.
i know it shouldn't be this hard but i see it is a lifelong commitment, like having a real child- so i don't want to do it until im 100% sure im ready, and can "keep it up" so to speak.
another thing is, i want a Russian child. i don't know why, and i know it doesn't matter in the long run, but i believe God gives you a heart for certain countries sometimes, and mine is Russia.
the problem is, i can't find a legit, CHRISTIAN organization that does Russian sponsorship.
does anyone know of one??
jayhawk4
03-15-2009, 06:28 PM
I absolutely agree with you -- it IS a commitment and you shouldn't do it until you feel comfortable. I felt the same way!
I don't know of any that work in Russia, but World Vision does have sponsored children in Romania.
Kelly
03-15-2009, 08:29 PM
Yes it's definitely a commitment and something you should pray about before doing. It took me 6 months to commit to sponsoring. But I believe with Compassion, you only sponsor until the child is 18, so it's not forever. *Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that*
As for sponsorships in Russia, I have no idea. Hope you find one :)

You're right. They do have the Leadership Development Program for some older students, but that's not for all, and it's different than the traditional sponsorship. It's essentially a college-type program, I believe.
But even so, when you consider that most kids up for sponsorship are ages 5-13 or so, that's a number of years to commit to. I definitely mulled it over for a few months before I decided to sponsor too!

What do you all do with your letters, pictures, etc. that you've gotten from your children? I'm wanting to start a scrapbook, but I'm trying to think of fun ways to design some pages for it.
Kelly
03-20-2009, 10:53 PM
Right now they're just in a folder, I want to scrapbook them, but most of the letters are double-sided with the letter on one side and a drawing on the other so I can't tape them to another piece of paper. I just have those in clear sleeves right now in the folder.

Man you guys I am SHAKING right now! I've been a little down today because of this whole job thing because in the last month BOTH of my parents have gotten new jobs. I just keep wondering why I can't seem to land a job. ANY job! Everyone makes it seem so easy, and it's not like I'm not trying, but it just keeps not working out! So today I was heading towards the door to check the mail. Dad & I had just been talking about his new job and how he's loving it. As I'm wheeling towards the door I was talking to God just saying "God, please just give me something...ANYTHING!" I get to the pile of mail on the floor & in the stack of mail there was a corner of an envelope sticking out that had the words "MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY" in capital bold letters, just right there in my face! I thought "No way is that for me! Sure enough I pull it out from the stack and it's from Compassion to me!!! I open it and enclosed was info and an application to become a Compassion Advocate! It's strictly a volunteer job, but what an INCREDIBLE opportunity!!!! The thought of speaking in front of people scares me TO DEATH! So I need SOOOO much prayer for that, but as I was reading I just started chanting "I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna do it!" (Cori I need to talk to you specifically about what happened next!) I just started crying right there & ran outta the house cause my dad was in the next room hehe. But I'm absolutely CERTAIN that I'm going to do it! I can't think of a more amazing opportunity!
They have two levels of advocacy and the first level only requires two activities and two-four sponsorships per year (at first I thought that meant I had to sponsor 2-4 per year, but level two requires 12 per year...so I'm thinking they mean I have to GET that many sponsors per year and I can TOTALLY do that!). I think that's a great way for me to just warm up to it & get used to the idea. Then I also get to staff the Compassion table at local events! :)
Please just pray for peace and direction in this! Going to mail my application in TOMORROW! :)

Recently I found out about a cool opportunity for those of us who are already Compassion sponsors. If you love building relationships with the kids, but aren't sure you can commit to sponsoring more right now, you can get a correspondence child!
Basically what happens is that they have people who want to financially sponsor children, but for whatever reason don't want to correspond with them. That's where we come in! You can call or e-mail Compassion (http://www.compassion.com/contact/default.htm) to let them know that you would like a correspondence child (or 2 or 3 or however many you can keep up with!). It's like being a sponsor, but without the financial responsibility. :)
I e-mailed them tonight to get connected with a child myself. Yay! :)

I haven't heard back from them yet, but I'm really excited about it. My heart just breaks for those kids who have sponsors, and write to them, but never get any letters back! It's easy to forget how important those letters are to them -- but I have to remember that my random, sometimes rambling letters are treasured possessions to my sponsored child!

Kelly, It will change your life! An awesome ministry opportunity. I became an advocate in 2004. Over the past few years there really hasn't been many opportunities in my area w/ events. You really can get emotionally involved and the people you meet that work w/ Compassion have this special essence about them. I had the opportunity to go to St. Paul for the yearly Compassion Conference back in 2006 w/ my State Coordinator, Pat Browder. She is such a beautiful woman of God and is such an encouragement to me!
My phone interview was very emotional it lasted 1 1/2 hours because my heart was and is on total over load for these children. It's hard for me to watch one of the Compassion videos w/ out tearing up. If you have any questions or need someone to lean on I'm here for you! You go girl! :) God will bless you abundantly! Welcome to an AMAZING journey!

Just ordered my Compassion Sunday materials. You're supposed to order them a month in advance but there was miscommunication between my pastor & I and he never ordered them. We're presenting next Sunday! I pray they get here by then! If not, oh well...we'll just present that day and set up the table at a later date....it's all good ;)
I have to say I'm so blessed to be a part of this! When I got the flyer in the mail a few months ago, I immediately shrugged it off like "Yeah, like I'm gonna give a public presentation at a new church where I don't know anyone!" But for some reason I didn't throw the flyer away...I put it in a very prominent spot on my desk. It "stared at me" for weeks & I finally said "You know what....I'm gonna do it!" So I presented the idea to my pastor not knowing how he would react...he took the idea and totally ran with it & made what could be just a 5 minute presentation into an ENTIRE SERVICE devoted to Compassion! And then from there, I've had many people come up to me letting me know that they are Compassion sponsors and they would love to help out in any way they can...so now we have three people speaking about their experiences w/ Compassion that day on top of the activities my pastor has in mind for the service! Woohoo!!! God is so good! :) See what happens when you submit to HIS will? :)
that's so awesome, kelly!!! :)
we started sponsoring our little girl because of the rawrs! :) we had a bit of financial recovery that needed to happen afterwards (*cough, shrug, cough* lol), so....we weren't able to OFFICIALLY start our sponsorship until last payday (2 wks ago), but...they cashed the check, so.....we're now sponsor-parents of a little girl in the dominican republic named nayeli. i can't WAIT to start writing letters to her!!! :D that's the part i'm the MOST excited about! and i'm praying that someday God will make a way for us to go there to meet her & her mom face to face. that would ROCK!!!
please let us know how your compassion sunday goes! and...you KNOW what kind of details we want! hehe :D

Awwww that's so awesome Cori!!! I LOVE getting letters from my little girl in the mail! The last time she wrote me she included a picture of her with a medal she won in a spelling bee...so cute! She begged me to send her pictures too, so I've gotta get some together and get those to her!
And yes I know exactly what you're talking about ;) I wish I knew how many packets they were sending. They just ask how many people you expect to be in attendance for the event and base it off that. Not sure what that means exactly, like if they send one per expected member, or extras or what....but we'll find out. It's funny, when I first talked to my pastor about it, he said "If you don't mind, I'd like to set up a table & have you run it to get sponsors" I was like "That's pretty much my main goal in all this, so of course I don't mind!" :p

They're sending 15 packets for a 120 member congregation. That seems a bit small & pessimistic if you ask me! :p Oh well I'm sure I can always request more. Just don't know what's gonna happen with all this. As of right now, our services this week have been cancelled!

Yeah, that does seem a little low, but maybe they have time proven stats that support that ratio or something. It does seem low, though. Will your pastor allow you to do the presentation another Sunday if there are no services this week?

I assume we'll just do it next week. I'm getting kinda anxious though. This whole thing was MY idea & he won't tell me what he has planned. He and his wife, Anni, (our worship leader) are being very secretive about it. Then last night I got on FB and left a message that I was sad we couldn't do our "Big Compassion Sunday activity" and Anni sent me a message asking me to stop talking about it. Weird! She wasn't mean about it....just wanted to make sure I don't mention it. I was like "Ummm...Compassion Sunday is MY thing...shouldn't I be involved?" :p Oh well...I'm excited to see what this big activity is that they have up their sleeves so I hope we get to do it!

But yeah I expected at LEAST 50! I even listened to the message over and over to see if maybe she said 50 and not 15, but she DEFINITELY said 15!

For anyone who sponsors through Compassion, they have a new social networking site for sponsors to connect with each other! Very cool. You can see who has children in the same project as your children, as well as connect with other sponsors where you live!

Is anybody from the Campgrounds helping w/ the Compassion table at any of the SLTB tour dates? I thought about it, but I'm going to the concert in my area with someone (who's not a sponsor), so I didn't want to say, "Sorry, I have to go work the table. I'll see you later." I might wear my Compassion t-shirt though ...

Have you written to your kids lately? Awesome blog post (http://blog.compassion.com/the-happiest-day-of-my-life/) at Compassion's site today.
Makes me tear up when I hear things like that, and then I think about my girls in Nicaragua and Ethiopia. It's good to be reminded that sponsorship is about so much more than money.

My child's project actually ended up leaving Compassion recently :( So as of right now, I don't sponsor anyone. But now that I have a job, as soon as I get my first paycheck I'm going to sponsor a new child :)

Kelly, you never mentioned how your Compassion Sunday presentation actually went or how that ended up all going. So....how did it go...I realize that was 6 months ago.
