I live down in Florida and our first week of school was a washout. We had tropical storm Fay roll through our town and we only went to school one day last week.

My first day of classes is Wednesday. It kind of cracks me up since this coming weekend is Labor Day weekend. 3 days of classes and then a 3 day weekend.

I moved into my apartment yesterday. I'm SO glad to be back at school. My apartment isn't so awesome though. I'm rather disappointed considering how much I'm paying to live here (over $3,000 for not even 4 complete months). There is a lot of wall damage. Someone ripped out the towel racks last year and the maintenance people never bothered to fix it. The bathroom is disgusting in general. There is absolutely no overhead lighting. There was no microwave. And the worst thing is that the AC doesn't really work. I hung up some posters in my room and went out for the day just to come back and find all of them laying on the floor due to it being so humid in my apartment. I could probably find somewhere cheaper (and just as good, if not nicer) to live off campus, but my parents insist that I live on campus.

I started last week. Other than still not having money for books since I'm waiting for my refund still, it's been going well so far. I have a busy semester though-three graphics classes-one is an animation class and one is a web design class.

You think THAT'S crazy....my last year before student teaching we had to do inservice training, but we only went one day a week - Mondays. And that year school started the Wednesday before Labor Day, so we started the semester a week and a half later than everyone else :p And then spring break.....we had two weeks off because we went the Monday before, then had all that week off, then the week of spring break, but then for the next two weeks, instead of working, we had workshops...so we essentially got a month off! It was awesome!!! :) Man I miss college hehe

But now I'm on the other end of school...and tomorrow is my first day of teaching!

I can't imagine starting a new school year in August, it seems so bizarre. Ours starts in January and so I have already had a good 8 months with my class. One month exactly today until our next week long holiday. I will be off to beautiful Cape Town with friends, so I can't wait.

Hope your new school years are good and that you have lovely teachers. Remember they have worked hard this last week of holidays preparing for you!

What classes are you guys taking/teaching?

I've got 16 hours this semester. Management Communications, Spanish I, Speech, Business Finance, and Intellectual Properties. The Spanish class is a 4 hour class because it meets 3 days a week and then you have a lab on a 4th day.

I also have two pass/fail classes that are a Music Business Seminar and a Music Business Internship Lab.

Should be a party, especially that finance class. haha

Wow, that is a whole range of different modules!

I teach grade 4, so basically a bit of everything.
English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Mathematics, Social Science, Natural Science, Economic and Management Sciences, Technology, Arts and Culture and Life Orientation.

Then on top of those we have PE, Drama, Computers, Media and Music, which we thankfully have specialist teachers for...because I would probably suck at teaching those.

All of this leads to a very busy week! I have no clue how we get through all of it but somehow we manage without going too crazy.

Well, my first day of classes was rather quick. haha

I had management communications at 12:00. My professor showed up late. I found that particularly funny since she's supposed to be teaching us business etiquette, which includes punctuality. I'm sure she probably just had a hard time finding somewhere to park. Looks like the class should be easy. Only 2 tests for the entire course (including the final), and the final isn't cumulative. There's like 1 project and she only grades 7 assignments out of the semester of work. It is going to be a lot of writing, but at least it's not research papers. Resumes, business letters, cover letters, and memos I can handle.

My Spanish class is very small. There are only 4 girls in the class (including me) and like 8 guys, which is rather weird considering the ratio usually favors the girls in any class at this college. She gave us some homework to memorize the Spanish alphabet and learn some introductions, but I already know both from the 3 years of Spanish I took in high school.

My music business internship lab met at 2. I found out the class only meets 5 times in total, so I've already got 1 out of the way. Our only assignments for the pass/fail course are to show up to the other 4 meetings and email a resume, cover letter, and reference page to the instructor. Should be a breeze. I don't even have to go back until the middle of September.

Got my refund this week (and it was a lot more than expected :D), so I have my books now. I'm taking Interactive Media (website design), Art as Communication, 2D/3D animation, English (American Literature), and Intro to Statistics.

So how is school going for everyone?

It's been relatively slow for me so far. I've only had one test so far. I've given one speech and have another one to give on Thursday.

And I got an email today telling me that I'm getting inducted into Alpha Chi, which is a national college honor society. Apparently I'm in the top 10% of my class (I'd hope so with a 3.9 GPA). Basically I'm hoping this will help in getting a scholarship and/or a job in a couple of years. :)

So how is school going for everyone?

I have fall break starting the end of next week. It technically starts on Friday, the 3rd, after I get out of class. But then I discovered that the Solid State tour that Norma Jean is headlining will be coming to Nashville on the 4th. I don't like Norma Jean all that much. I couldn't even name one of their songs, but Children 18:3 is an opening act, so I'm not going to miss out on that.

Now I find myself in a dilemma though because if I leave to go home on the 5th, by the time I get there I'll only have 2 days to spend at home and both of my parents work until about 8 or 9PM. So I'll spend probably about $250 on gas roundtrip just to sit at home alone. So now I'm trying to see if my brother will let me go to his house since he just lives in AL, which is obviously much closer to TN than SC. I could stay on campus too, but it would be a nightmare since fall break is when the presidential debates go down on campus. I don't really want to be here when the secret service goes through my stuff. And I don't really want to get sniped from a rooftop for leaving my apartment the day of (they told us that we are for no reason to leave or enter campus from 2PM to 11PM on the day of the debates). Motion of any sort is going to be perceived as a threat apparently. I'd end up being a prisoner in my own apartment basically.
