I don't know. I don't drive yet, yea i'm 19 and I don't drive yet. I've got a permit, but no license, yet.
Labby

Brian, don't worry about not having a license yet. I was 20 before I got mine.
And gas prices here were $3.89 when I got off work this morning.
LauraA
05-16-2008, 01:34 AM
Yeah, Brian. If you are getting by without driving, all the better. The time will come when you'll need your permit, but until then, it's perfectly fine not to be driving.
Our gas is about $3.77 or something like that. (Yesterday)

Okay, this is a little funny:
After leaving Wisconsin, I flew to Missouri to visit some friends there. My friend was talking about how expensive gas was, while I was amazed at how cheap it was. It somehow came out that I had never pumped gas before (you don't pump your own gas in Oregon), and so my friends decided that I was pumping gas on this trip.
Gas was $2.90. I know this because I still have the receipt. It hadn't been that cheap in Oregon for months.
Oh, and they took a picture:

Labby, I have a picture just like that. I pumped my own petrol for the first time when I was on holiday in Australia. It was quite a novelty but I can imagine it getting boring pretty fast.
I quite enjoy having someone check my tyres, oil and water and clean my windscreen in the time it takes for them to pump my petrol. I guess foreigners see that as lazy, but it gives someone a job.
I did the conversions and I am paying $5.06 and we pretty much have a price rise every third Wednesday.

It's good to see you are acquiring new skills, but you won't be a real gas/petrol pumper until you've driven off without the gascap, or at least left the filler door open.:)

My friend's car had no gas cap. Her fiance (also from Oregon) had forgot to replace it after filling up.
Evidently I did better on my first pumping than he did. I didn't stare at the pump for five minutes trying to figure out how it worked.
And Lily, we don't have full service in Oregon any more. So I still have to wipe off my own windshield and stuff. And I should probably get the air in my tires checked soon. I haven't done that since I took the studs off (something I do myself -- my snow tires have their own rims).

We are also fortunate to have some gasoline boys (local term) serving us here in the Philippines. Yes, it does offer jobs. The payment is almost similar to those who are working in McDonalds. Not too much to say they're getting above average but enough to survive a big family. :(
But having gasoline boys feel more like a Pitstop, lol. :D
Btw, If I have the chance to fill the tank, wash the windshield, tune-up the car. I might also get a picture of myself doing it. :) Life is short to not try something different right?

Man everybody here pumps their own gas.
Diesel is currently £1.20 a litre here (5 litres to a gallon means that its £6.00 which in dollars is $12) so you guys get it easy, we get taxed so heavily on petrol/diesel its ridiculous, and it keeps on going up.

Does Europe pay more for gas? You better believe it.
Does Europe have much better public transportation? Ohhh yeah. Almost infinitely better transportation than us.
If I want to go to Portland, without driving, it's impossible. Someone has to drive -- there's no public transportation to get me there.
Here in the Philippines. Diesel prices are now P42 or $1. Gasoline 93+ RON is around P51 or $1.2.
I just wished I can buy an electric car. It is so much better than a motorcycle for some good reasons.
- You can store more items inside
- You can haul one or three more of your friends.
- Freedom from gas but I pay more for electricity. We use hydro electric power here not coal which is more environmentally friendly.
- You will not fall from a car
- You don't have to wipe your face in order to remove the dust from driving a motorcycle on the street.
- You don't have to wear helmets, just seat belts.
- You can enjoy music
And the list goes on. :D

4-5 hours.... Not bad. That's driving across Oregon. Well, half of Oregon.
I typically am driving over 2 hours to do anything worthwhile. Like tomorrow morning: I get to drive to Portland to get my head.
And drey, my town uses hydroelectric power, too. We've got a big dam here (80% of the power generated here goes straight to Los Angeles -- I'm in Northern Oregon).

I don't mind driving around in the suburbs where I live, but will not drive into Chicago. Then again, I don't need to. Our mass transit isn't the cleanest or most up to date in the world, but in terms of getting riders from point A to point B efficiently and economically, it truly is world class.
I want to move to the Philippines!!!
LOL, most of us Filipino wants to work there abroad. Because outside the Philippines feel much safer, having better health and government services, and might as well say better, cheaper and more fuel efficient vehicles such as the Toyota Prius or any hybrid.
If we buy a Toyota Prius here, it'll cost 2x more due to tax. But we do have t-shirts and pants being sold here for $2. Meat is expensive here, vegetables are getting expensive but I believe not as expensive compared to US prices. Here, houses are also cheaper. For $80,000-200,000... You can buy a mansion here. :)
As a matter of fact, having $25,000 will give you the title of being a millionaire. :D

Why can't we push for alternatives?

For you people unaware, there are 3.78541178 litres in a gallon. So that means you multiply £1.20 by 3.785 and get $4.54. And don't forget that the pound is worth almost double the American dollar (1.8501 U.S. dollars). So multiply that out and Euan pays $8.40 per gallon.
That's why you always hear me telling people (Americans) to shut up when they complain about gas prices. Europe's been paying a whole lot more that we have for a long time. :)

Very true! Although when I was in England a few years back we didn't use a car the whole time. They had trains/subway/buses that went everywhere you needed to go.
Where I live there's none of that, therefore I have no choice but to drive. Now that's probably not true everywhere there, but that makes a difference

Exactly! I think trains would rock! But the U.S. is MUCH larger than a European country. Their countries are like our states. And look at what a disaster Amtrak has been since they've ripped up so much track due to lack of use that they now have to use the tracks of the commercial companies... which means weight for the freight trains before the passenger trains can go.
